Jim Hilands, SIOR, 76, passed away on Feb. 13, 2013. Jim graduated from the University of Oregon in 1958 with a BBA degree. He loved his college days and enjoyed amazing camaraderie with his Phi Delta Theta fraternity brothers. After graduation, Jim left his home state of Oregon and moved to California. There he met Jack Heger and began his career at Heger Industrial over 55 years ago. Over the decades that followed, Jim was
instrumental in putting together numerous, high profile investment transactions—he was always proud to represent Heger Industrial in his transactions.
He joined SIOR in 1969 and held the designation for over 44 years. Jim was always known for his tremendous spirit and passion for the profession. He
loved taking family trips to the Oregon coast and the Sierra-Nevada Mountains.
Joseph Dillon Kalkhurst, SIOR, 73, of Raleigh, N.C. passed away at UNC Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill on March 20, 2013 following complications from cardiac surgery. He received his college education at UNC Chapel Hill where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, the Gorgons Head Lodge and the Men's Swimming Team. He served in the US Marine Corps, trained at Parris Island and later became a member of
the USMC Reserve Unit in Raleigh. His rewarding and successful real estate career began when he joined Williams and Haywood. He later co-founded
Dillon and Company which became a successful residential firm. As time went by, Joe's interests turned to commercial real estate ventures. To pursue
those interests he first formed Capital City Management Company, then later joined York Properties, starting up and overseeing the commercial division
as well as continuing with his own brokerage activities. His specialty was tax-deferred exchanges and sale/leaseback transactions. Joe served as president
of the Raleigh-Wake County Board of Realtors and was a former Realtor of the Year. He was also a president of the Carolinas Chapter of the Society of Industrial and
Office Realtors (SIOR). His common sense and straightforward way of consensus building and problem solving endeared him to a multitude of realtors who practice
residential and commercial brokerage in the area today.
Peter G. Redmond Sr., SIOR, of Albany died on Saturday, March 2, 2013 after a lengthy battle with lung cancer. He was 78 years old. A lifetime resident of Albany, he was a graduate of Vincentian Institute and earned a B.S. in economics from Siena College in 1957. He served in the U.S. Army and Reserves from 1957 to 1969 where he attained the rank of captain. Peter was a commercial real estate broker for over 40 years with
Robert Cohn Associates and CBRE/Albany. He was an active member of the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors (SIOR). Peter was a devoted friend
of Bill W. for more than thirty years and as a result touched many people's lives. He was also an avid sailor who loved Lake George. He was the beloved
father of four children, Carol R. (Timothy) Naughton, Donna R. (John) O'Neill, Peter G. (Melissa) Redmond, Jr. and Christopher J. (Krista) Redmond.
He is also survived by ten grandchildren and his dear brother, William J. (Joan) Redmond, Sr. Peter was predeceased by his parents, Daniel J. and Marie
Redmond and his brother, Daniel J. Redmond, Jr.
